Best of the semester - 3

          I'm hiring a new English instructor for my school.  I received the following two résumés from people applying for the job.  One is from Lynn Whitnall, and the other is from Debra Fines.  The two résumés are different in several ways.  First of all, Lynn Whitnall’ s education is different from Debra Fines’.  Debra has more educations than Lynn.  So, I think that Debra will teach more useful things than Lynn.  Second, their employment experiences are discrepancy.  Debra has a lot of employment experience, while Lynn doesn’t.  According to comparison of their experience, I think that Debra is more experienced.   Third, Lynn got the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2004, while Debra published the English Verb Tenses and Shortman Publishing Company in 2006.  Therefore, I would like to choose Debra to be a new English instructor for my school, and I think she will do her best!

     I oppose using nuclear power to solve the energy crisis.  First of all, this will increase greenhouse gas emissions.  We had only one earth, if the greenhouse gases harm to the atmosphere, our environment will become terrible.  Second, if the nuclear power plants explode accidentally, it will be an indelible injury.  For example, Chernobyl's explosion made a lot of people lead a miserable life.  Third, we don’t know how to deal with the nuclear waste.  There will be a lot of waste from nuclear, but they will harm our ecology.  In conclusion, if we want to lead a safe life, we should reduce the use of nuclear energy, and save energy.

     Drinking a moderate amount of caffeine probably won’ t cause you any harm.  But drinking too much caffeine can have negative effects on your health.  Heavy caffeine use is more than 500 to 600 mg a day (four to seven cups of coffee).  Here are some of the effects of too much caffeine.  First of all, you may fall ill called insomnia.  This disease keeps you from sleeping so that you will easily get nervous and anxious.  Second, caffeine makes your muscle tremor abnormally.  When you want to get something drink, your hands tremble violently so that your glass slips out of your hands.  Soon, you will find the inconveniences from too much caffeine.  Third, the serious headaches will hit you!  You can’ t sleep, you are out of spirits and then you suffer from headaches.  Last but not the least, you will bear nausea or other gastrointestinal problems.  The problems of stomach will affect the whole life.  Without a good stomach, there is no beauty in life.  Therefore, if you want to lead a beautiful life, you should keep caffeine away.

     I’ve lived in a small town called Acton.  It has a population of 2,500.  It is safe, quiet, and clean place to live.  Most of the people have lived here all their lives and know each other very well.  And it has not changed very much in the past 100 years.  Recently, it was last month that Stanley Manufacturing decided to open a large factory in our town.  We were worry about that this decision will bring some bad influence.  First of all, the large town will bring many new people to the community makes population explosion.  This quiet and clean place may become noisy and untidy one.  Second, the pollution from the consequence of building a new factory may harm the environment, including air pollution, water pollution and noise pollution.  The air here may be polluted by some chemicals and the air may harm our health.  The water may be polluted by waste water.  And people drink the water with bad materials.  The noise from the machines which are operating may ruin the environmental tranquility.  Last, benefit-based relationships may become sharp.  The people living here will not help each other without benefits.  The peace of the town will disappear.  Therefore, we don’t agree with this idea.  We will protest against the decision to protect our town.

     I’ m a business administration student.  I found there are several reasons why Mr. Williams’ business failed.  First of all, the store’ s location was inappropriate because it was located near a shopping center which has two large music stores.  Second, the CDs there were hip-hop and rock that Mr. Williams bought were monotonous.  However, people who may present themselves for buying CDs are middle-aged people.  The middle-aged may refuse to buy hip-hop and rock style CDs.  Furthermore, the wages for Mr. Williams’ employees was too high.  Therefore, Mr. Williams would lose money before earn money.  Last but not the least, the shop hours are too short.  He carried on business on the wrong time and opened his store too little time so that he would lose a great deal of customers.  To sum up, Mr. Williams’ failure on business is reasonable and we can use this case as a warning.

     Over the past 150 years there has been a huge increase in population.  According to scientists’ researches, there are a lot of reasons for it.  First of all, medicine and health care are progressive.    In the past, there is a great deal of diseases that doctors can’t remedy.  Now, medicine has made great progress.  Therefore, the mortality is decreasing.  Second, we have better sanitation.  With health concepts, modern people care hygiene, including food hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental sanitation, and so on.  To maintain good health habits, you can avoid falling ill.  Third, people improved farming methods that produce more and better food.  There are more people discovering better farming methods, and manufacturing abundant food.  Last but not the least, fewer infant deaths and more people living longer lead to a huge population.  Hospital care is complete, so the infant mortality decreases.  And the old may take plenty of medicines to keep their life.  To sum up, the population suddenly increase is because the technology is advancing.

     I am in favor of the death penalty.  I think this punishment is necessary.  First of all, the condemned are wasting our food when they are in prison.  The government uses taxpayers' money to buy their food for feeding them.  Second, if we cancel the death penalty, the criminal rate may increase.  It is because the criminals don’t worry that they will die and their living.  Therefore, some people will kill those who they hate, not horrifying their punishment.  Furthermore, if they release on parole or forever, the people will be anxious anytime and anywhere.  Third, I think the death penalty is the only way that the condemned can be responsible for their mistakes.  They should use a life for a life, or for many lives.  To sum up, the death penalty can punish someone as a warning to others, so I approve it!

     When I visited my friend’s home last month, we watched two movies.  We watched “Inkheart” and “The Spiderwick Chronicles” in the morning.  Inkheart and The Spiderwick Chronicles are alike in several ways.  First or all, Inkheart was a science fiction film. Similarly, The Spiderwick Chronicles was a science fiction film.   And the former movie is as exciting as the latter.  Second, the characters consist of humans and animation figures in Inkheart; likely, The Spiderwick Chronicles consists of humans and animation figures.  So, I think these two films are interesting and cute, even though there are many ugly and evil animation figures.  Third, the ending of Inkheart is similar to the ending of The Spiderwick Chronicles, they are warm and fragrant.  Last but not the least, both Inkheart and The Spiderwick Chronicles teach us that the importance of family love and unity.  Therefore, if you want to see movies as your pastime after monthly exams, not forgetting to watch these two films!
